Udaipur ("City of the Sunrise") was made the capital of the princely state of Udaipur (Mewar) by Maharaja Udai Singh in 1568 after the sack of Chittaurgarh. The walled city stands on a ridge culminating in the Maharaja's City Palace, construction of which began in 1570. To the west is Lake Pichola with its two small islands and marble palaces, one of which served as a refuge for Mughal Emperor Shah Jaen (r. 1628-1658) when he led a rebellion against his father Jahengarh before ascending to the throne. One of the palaces has been converted into a luxury hotel.
2. Chittorgarh-Chittorgarh Fort is considered a symbol of Rajput chivalry, resistance, and bravery. The fort is located 175 km east of Udaipur and is supposedly named after its builder, Chitrangada Mori. The famous Chittorgarh Fort, one of the largest in India, sits on a 180-meter-high hilltop on the banks of the River Beraha. The fort is known for its seven gates: Padan Gate, Ganesh Gate, Hanuman Gate, Bhairon Gate, Jodra Gate, Lakshman Gate, and the main gate named after Lord Ram. Chittorgarh Fort houses many palaces, such as Rana Kumbha Palace, Fateh Prakash Palace, Victory Tower, and Rani Padmini Palace. All these monuments are significant in Rajput architecture. There are also many temples within the fort, with the huge Jain temple complex being the main attraction. Chittorgarh Fort, along with other hill forts in Rajasthan, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013.
3 . Ajmer-Ajmer city, in the state of Rajasthan, is best known for being near the sacred Hindu town of Pushkar. Ajmer itself is an important city to Muslims—it’s home to Sharif Dargah, a shrine to a Sufi saint—as well as Jains. While many visitors use it as a base for exploring Pushkar, it’s also a worthwhile destination.
4. Jaisalmer-Jaisalmer, a mystical city in the state of Rajasthan, is situated on the westernmost frontier of India and rises from the heart of the Thar Desert. Also attributed as the “Golden City of India” owing to the yellow sand and yellow sandstone used in the architecture of the town that gives it a golden look, Jaisalmer is famous all over the world for its palaces and forts of spectacular opulence. The city covers a total area of 5.1 square kilometers and is located at an altitude of 225 meters above sea level amid the scenic Thar Desert. Jaisalmer was earlier surrounded by an extensive wall, but at present nothing remains except the gates and the huge fort, which crowns the city and is considered the soul of Jaisalmer.Jaisalmer, which was once a sleepy desert city, has transformed itself into one of India’s key tourist destinations as well as claims an important position among the tourist attractions spread all over the desert land of Rajasthan.
5.Jodhpur-Jodhpur, the second largest city in Rajasthan, is popularly known as the Blue City. The name is obviously appropriate, as most of the buildings (forts, palaces, temples, havelis, and even houses) are built in a bright shade of blue. The mighty forts towering over this magnificent city combine to create a sight not to be missed. The huge and imposing Mehrangarh Fort stands amidst a landscape of rocky ridges, with eight gates leading out from the fort. The new city lies outside the structure. Jodhpur is also known for its rare breed of horses known as Marwari or Malani, which can only be found here.
The origins of Jodhpur date back to 1459 AD. The history of this wealthy city revolves around the Rathole clan. Rao Jodha, the chief of the Rathole clan, is believed to have founded Jodhpur in India. The city is known to have been built on the site of the ancient capital of Mandore in the state of Manwar. Hence, the people of Jodhpur and its surrounding areas are popularly known as Marwari. It is believed that the relics of Mandore can still be seen in the Mandore Gardens.
